Q&A WITH A MKWE HOMEOWNER
Sometimes it’s best to hear it from the horse’s mouth. We got in touch with P. Gitonga, a homeowner at MKWE, to get his perspective:
When did you buy your house in Mount Kenya Wildlife Estate?
Back in 2012
How did you hear about it?
I saw an ad in the newspaper and thought it looked interesting.
Can you tell us something about the process you took, from first hearing about it to moving in?
The advert required that we call or email Ryden International. I called and my wife and I made an appointment with Rose, who took us through the project details, including the payment plan, which seemed very reasonable.
We decided to visit the property over the upcoming open days. Construction hadn’t yet started on the ground, and all we could see then was the bush. When I enquired about the project team, I realised that I knew the contractor well and that added to the confidence in buying an off-plan property.
We decided to commit to MKWE as we always wanted a ’shags’ (upcountry) home. MKWE ticked a lot of boxes due to the presence of the wildlife, the fair distance from Nairobi, and the warm climate in Nanyuki. The idea of having rentals when the family was not using the home was really interesting as it would contribute towards maintenance of the home. We were very excited when handover day came.
How much time do you spend there – is it a permanent home or a weekend getaway?
We use it a lot for weekends as we are still working in Nairobi.
What’s your favourite thing about having a home in the wilderness?
The wildlife! When I tell people that animals come to my verandah, they do not believe it. It is a home where the animals feel safe enough to come to you.
Would you recommend it to others, and why?
I have already recommended it to a friend and she also bought it, for the same reasons as we did: wildlife, weather, proximity to Nairobi, security and that it’s completely hassle free.
