While in Kenya has confirmation been received that the new cruise terminal at the port of Mombasa will be handed over by the contractor tomorrow, 16th of December.
The 3.5 plus million US Dollar facility is expected to be offically opened and launched when President Uhuru Kenyatta comes to the Kenya coast for his traditional festive season break – which even his late father, Kenya’s founder President and father of the nation used to do until he passed in August 1978.
The new cruise terminal was built to capture a larger share of cruise tourism by offering better facilities for embarking and disembarking passengers. Cruises across the Indian Ocean islands have in recent years become a lot more popular again and some cruise lines have in fact based their ships in the region to visit the Vanilla Islands but also make port calls on the African mainland. Here Kenya is in pole position to offer exciting excursions and safaris while a ship is in port.
Tourism generates some 9 percent of Kenya’s GDP and is a major source of employment and more cruise liners – the first ship is due to arrive at the new terminal just before Christmas – will help raise tourist arrival numbers.
