Every day, Mount Kenya Trust’s rangers put their lives on the line to protect our forests, wildlife, and communities. They patrol vast, rugged landscapes, confront poachers, limit forest destruction, and, as trained wild land firefighters, respond to wildfires all to safeguard the mountain that is our water tower, our home, and our heritage.
While they stand guard for us they face enormous challenges. Limited resources mean that we can always do better for them, provide better equipment, improved ranger bases and back up support. We can mobilise them more often to respond to community members needing assistance or to take part in wildlife rescues. We can have them camp for longer in remote areas to address chronic issues with the Government rangers. We can ensure that they are provided with more formal training and greater skillsets which we need not just to reduce forest destruction but to actively determine and monitor the causes of threats and respond to those within communities and for communities.
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge is more than a set of challenges and a race, it is a call to stand in solidarity with the men and women who carry the weight of protecting Mount Kenya on their shoulders.
This is where you come in. Your support will provide critical essentials for our rangers from medical care and training to the daily necessities that keep them strong in the field. Every contribution, no matter the size, is matched and is a lifeline that ensures that we can protect the integrity of Mount Kenya as part of the wider community.
