In the serene village of Patate Théophile, on the eastern side of Rodrigues Island, Nature’s Spells shines a light on tradition and wellness through a range of natural products. Founded in 2019 by Marie Danie Ah Thiong, this family-run business offers eco-friendly agro-food items, cosmetics, and herbal teas, all crafted with a commitment to sustainability and responsible farming practices. Also the manager of Rêve des Îles Guest House, Marie Danie uses her expertise to meet the growing demand for organic raw-material-based products.
Locally made, Nature’s Spells products are available at markets across Rodrigues and Mauritius, though the entrepreneurial journey is not without its challenges. Nevertheless, Marie Danie remains resolute.
“We emphasize medicinal and natural plants so that everyone can benefit from their virtues,” she explains. The range includes balms, oil macerates, scrubs, infusions, soaps, and syrups, made with local ingredients such as moringa, noni, and coconut oil. The company also prioritizes sourcing raw materials from local producers who share its ecological values.
Despite the necessity of importing certain cosmetic bases, Nature’s Spells continues to innovate. In October 2024, Marie Danie participated in the Salon de la Cosmétique at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, marking a first for the company. This milestone was made possible through support from the Indian Ocean Commission.
“It allowed us to showcase our products internationally and connect with other industry players,” she shares.
A Vision Rooted in Innovation and Sustainability
What sets Nature’s Spells apart is Danie Ah Thiong’s constant investment in research and development. She has structured her business with modern equipment, a purpose-built facility, and a dedicated team for cultivating, harvesting, and processing raw materials. Through close collaboration with local authorities and researchers, she participates in initiatives promoting innovation, sustainability, and the exchange of best practices in the agro-industry.
The entrepreneur has also received vital support from authorities, including employee training programs, financing for equipment purchases, and the allocation of land to help her project thrive.
“Global demand for organic products promoting health and well-being is a promising trend,” she adds.
Nature’s Spells products can be found at the Port Mathurin markets, Roussetier Supermarket, Amelie’s Patisserie, and are also available for order in Mauritius.
Overcoming Challenges
The company faces obstacles, including limited availability and inconsistent quality of raw materials, as well as the lack of laboratories in Rodrigues to certify its products. These issues complicate access to both international and sometimes even local markets. Still, Danie remains optimistic.
In partnership with other entrepreneurs, she co-founded the Association des Entrepreneurs de Plantes Médicinales, Aromatiques et Cosmétiques. The organization aims to structure this growing sector by improving access to raw materials, training, and research.
“Consumers are increasingly interested in natural products for skincare, hair care, and even food items that promote well-being. We must tackle these challenges together,” she concludes with conviction.
Nature’s Spells is, above all, a remarkable entrepreneurial journey, combining tradition, innovation, and respect for nature – a true reflection of Rodrigues Island
