RWANDAIR ANNOUNCES LAUNCH FARES FOR LUSAKA FLIGHTS
(Posted 17th February 2015)
When RwandAir commences their flights from Kigali to Lusaka, three times a week as part of their daily services to Johannesburg, will some feathers in other airline headquarters no doubt be ruffled more than just a bit.
Over the past years has the airline under CEO John Mirenge and Chairman of the Board Girma Wake, and in fact the entire staff, almost by stealth built their own hub network out of Kigali, now connecting 16 destinations across Africa and as far as Dubai. A fleet of brand new aircraft, all but two B737-700NG’s which were acquired from TuiFly with 5 and 6 years of service respectively, has helped to build a reputation of time keeping, comfort and safe operations, after IATA officially certified RwandAir last year after passing the IOSA audit. A recently expanded and modernized Kigali International Airport has helped to cater for the sharp rise in transit passengers, a key element in the airline’s growth strategy as point to point traffic into Kigali, while also rising, could alone not sustain the operation.
Now also flying as Uganda’s adopted airline out of Entebbe to such destinations like Juba and Nairobi are there indications that further fifth freedom destinations may be added soon, turning Uganda’s main airport into RwandAir’s mini hub.
Lusaka, as mentioned before, will be served three times a week enroute to Johannesburg, using a Boeing B737-800NG aircraft and passengers will be able to travel in both directions out of Zambia’s capital city, under fifth freedom rights to Johannesburg and of course to Kigali and beyond.
RwandAir yesterday published their launch fares into Lusaka from across their network and there is general anticipation that these fare bargains will be snapped up on the double considering the short connection times in Kigali which makes up for the little detour. Visitors from across Africa may also consider staying over in Kigali to explore the city and the country. This is made easy as Rwanda has a Visa on arrival policy for citizens of the African Union member states.
