New biodiversity centre opens on Mahe

SEYCHELLES LAUNCHES ARBORETUM

(Posted 21st July 2014)

The Seychelles national biodiversity centre was formally launched last week on the western side of the archipelago’s main island of Mahe, by the Minister for Environment and Energy Rolph Payet.

The 17 hectares of land set aside by the government for this purpose have been transformed into a showcase for the Seychelles’ wide range of flora, allowing visitors to get a broad overview of the biodiversity across the 115 islands which make up the archipelago.

According to information received will the site, which was previously not open for the general public unless by prior arrangement, be looked after by the National Botanical Garden Foundation. Thousands of visitors are now expected to come to the site as part of their tours and excursions while on Mahe and those unable to visit Praslin’s Valle’ de Mai where they could see the main home of the famous Coco de Mer, can discover a few sample palms at the new arboretum site, besides many other trees, shrubs, herbs, medicinal plants, orchids and flowers.

A tree and plant nursery has also been established where local resident can obtain seeds and seedlings for replanting in their own gardens. Seychelles, truly is Another World. For more destination information click on the following link: www.seychelles.travel
