NO HAPPY ENDING FOR WALTER MZEMBI AS HON. MUPFUMIRA PRICAH BECOMES NEW TOURISM MINISTER

When the announcements of new cabinet positions in Zimbabwe reached the media yesterday it was instantly obvious that there was no job for former Tourism and more recently Foreign Minister Walter Mzembi, previously at one time the longest serving tourism minister in Africa.
He was out of the cabinet of new Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa who two days ago, after his swearing in, dissolved the old regime’s cabinet and appointed individuals who had his trust.
New in the job as Zimbabwe’s Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Industry is Mupfumira Pricah who will waste no time to build on the country’s newfound popularity around the world after the bloodless ouster of former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe.
Under the Mugabe leadership was Zimbabwe almost a pariah state and as a result did tourism not develop as should have been the case, given the many attractions the country holds.
Now, with Mugabe gone and the new government enjoying the traditional 100 days of unfettered settling in, will the country be able to build on its traditional strengths to bring in more tourists and revive a sector which has been suffering from depressed performances over the past years.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority will no doubt now look ahead at ITB 2018, where incidentally neighbour Zambia will be the partner country, and court the world’s tourism fraternity to give the country a new chance and add visits to Zimbabwe, stand alone or in combination with Zambia and other neighbours, to their offerings of big game safaris and tours to see heritage and culture.

To the new minister it is a warm welcome and best wishes for the massive task ahead for her and her team, in the Ministry and at ZTA, to turn around Zimbabwe’s tourism fortunes and bring tourists back in large numbers to visit the country.
