| It’s a heady feeling to have accomplished so many goals that I set myself from mid-February onwards; a period that has brought many revelations, and despite a few aches and moments of panic, one that has been enjoyable and intensely satisfying. I’m excited to have cleared the decks so that I can now get back to my 7ft canvas commission of Amboseli elephants; a project that will certainly be a magnum opus for me, and one that I’m glad I now have the momentum to engage with. There are also the joys of framing and shipping all this work to look forward to, and I will be preparing for my first workshop of the year in Alberta in July. No rest for the wicked!
You may or may not have followed a new idea Facebook gave me a couple of weeks ago: when they introduced the new live video feature, a moment of inspiration struck me, which culminated in a live Facebook ‘Quick-Paint’ raffle. This involved painting a lion on a 24 x 24 canvas in 2 hours on a live video feed, after which a ticket was drawn to win the painting. Initially I planned to run it as an auction, but that excluded those with poor internet connections and those who were busy during the arranged time period. I also wanted everyone to have a fair chance of owning the finished painting, regardless of what they were able to afford. So I set it up as a raffle, with tickets available beforehand, and during via PayPal, and the event was a huge success, with 50% of all proceeds donated to the Predator Proof Boma project at Soysambu Conservancy. I will be doing this again on June 12th, and have set up an event on Facebook where you will be able to get information about tickets, times and what the subject will be. If you aren’t on Facebook, you won’t be able to view the video (unless you ask a friend who is), but you can still get tickets and have the chance to win an original by me for as little as $5, with 50% of proceeds to Soysambu Conservancy. With all this going on, the last thing on my mind was a complete overhaul of my website, but in a gesture of customary generosity, my provider decided to ‘retire’ my template, and I was forced to do it. Not one to buckle under pressure, and despite a great deal of language flying around the studio, I managed to put together something I’m very pleased with. My new site has more detailed information about work for sale, prints for sale, conservation projects, upcoming workshops and new videos on my YouTube channel. |

The Jackson Hole Art Auction
For many years I’ve been wanting to paint a leopard in an iconic Soysambu setting. This is close to a very popular campsite named after my Dad, and is titled ‘Spirit of Soysambu’ (36 x 24). Society of Animal Artists
‘Crowns of an Uncertain Realm’ – 30 x 40, will feature in the SAA’s 56th Annual Exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science from September. Live Facebook Quick-Draw
On Sunday, June 12th, I will go live on facebook to paint a 24 x 24 canvas of a charging rhino from my last safari. This is a sketch of the painting I will work on. The sketch and the painting will be available to win via a raffle, for which you can buy $5 tickets HERE. You can participate without watching the live facebook feed, and the videos will be posted on my website and social media afterwards. 50% of proceeds from this raffle will go to Predator Proof Bomas for Soysambu Conservancy. Animal Icons
And finally… Andrew Denman and I will be putting together a themed body of work for a show in Walnut Creek, California on November 11th – 13th at Diablo Fine Art Gallery. The show will include work that explores narratives in the relationship between the animal world and iconography throughout history.
