New Year’s Day Cessna crash has lucky ending

PILOT ESCAPES EMERGENCY LANDING WITHOUT INJURIES

(Posted 02nd January 2015)

The pilot of a Cessna C206F Stationair had a lucky escape, when, after making an emergency landing in a maizefield near Kamengo, Mpigi District, the aircraft overturned and came to a halt upside down.

The plane, registration number 5X-WTA, was enroute from the Mweya airstrip to the Kajjansi airfield outside Kampala but fortunately carried no passengers.

While the age of the aircraft could not be ascertained immediately was the manufacturers’ serial number established as U20602547. The plane was, before coming to Uganda, registered in the United States as N1270V.

The same plane was reportedly involved in another emergency landing in August 2009 with two passengers on board when, after an engine failure, it landed on the busy Masaka to Kampala road, evading traffic before coming to a halt off the road.

Information received yesterday afternoon speaks of the plane’s propeller and engine damaged as was the hull of the aircraft when it flipped over while landing. The nose gear was reportedly ripped off during the landing attempt. The wreck of the plane is presently guarded by local police until the air accident investigation team has inspected the plane and thereafter authorized its removal and transport back to Kampala.
