Welcome to the second edition of 2015.

Summer is already upon us and with it the season of sun, carnival and happiness.

So what better way to kick off this edition of Kreol magazine than with our cover feature article on Pharell Williams (p. 8) the "Crowned Head of Happy" and the UN’s official partner for the dissemination of Happiness. In fact, happiness and its attainment is a theme that runs right throughout this issue.

Happiness achieved through dint of hard work, talent and determination is epitomised by many of the subjects of our feature section. Sir James Mancham (p. 14), the first President of the Republic of Seychelles, prolific writer and activist, was described by Dr. Adish Aggarwala, President of the International Council of Jurists, as “a visionary statesman who has influenced many world leaders with his contemporary philosophy and outlook”. Garcelle Beauvais (p. 20) is best known as a model and for her acting roles in film and television. However, few are aware that she is the youngest of a family of 7 children brought over to the USA from Haiti. Determination and vision were the vital qualities possessed by Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael (p. 36) and Cape Verde Islands and Guinea Bissau revolutionary visionary Amilcar Cabral (p. 32) who both fought to liberate their peoples from injustice. The same attributes have also served Louisiana born Ward Connerly (p. 28) and Trinidad born Rhoda Reddock (p. 24) in their respective struggles for the creation of a post-racial "colour blind" nation and the dissemination of gender equality and social justice.

If happiness could be defined in a single word then "Carnival" would surely be one of the top candidates. Here at Kreol we have the sheer ebullient joy of "Carnival" in abundance with features on the Louisiana (p. 60), Victoria (p.64) and Martinique (p. 68) Carnivals in the U.S., Seychelles and Caribbean respectively.

It was the ancient Greeks who understood that the source of happiness is a "sound body and resourceful mind". This issue has sustenance galore for mind, body and soul in our arts, music, food, beauty and fashion sections. Be sure to check out our fascinating features on heavy weight boxer B.Ware (p. 102), young cricket team from University of Trinidad & Tobago (p. 98), veteran Caribbean music maestros Dédé Saint Prix (p. 88) and Monty Alexander (p. 86) and upcoming sculptor Jallim Eudovic (p. 56). Also featured are two fashion phenomenae Sibu (p. 112), and Adrian Foster (p. 108) as well as our regular CD and book reviews and food and beauty sections.

So stay happy and be sure to take a look at our offerings online at www.kreolmagazine.com

Enjoy.
