Greetings Porini Enthusiast!

We are now coming to the end of our busy summer peak season and have had some great feedback from our many visitors who have been on safari with us in the last three months. The wildebeest migration in the Mara and adjacent Conservancies has been truly spectacular this year and guests staying at our Porini Mara Camp and Porini Lion Camp have been amazed at the large variety of wildlife to be seen, in addition to the huge numbers of wildebeest, especially lions and the other big cats! Our resident prides of lions in Olare Motorogi and Ol Kinyei Conservancies have had months of easy living with the abundance of prey available in the form of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest present in the Mara Reserve and adjacent conservancies.

Guests at our other Porini Camps also had wonderful wildlife viewing in the last few weeks and here are just a couple of highlights:

In Selenkay Conservancy, guests staying at our Gamewatchers Adventure Camp were on a game drive with our guide Wilson ole Kasaine when they saw a demonstration of who was the real King of the Jungle. The Selenkay lion pride was lazing around in the shade when an elephant bull came along and attracted their attention. When he saw them and stepped forward they all beat a hasty and rather undignified retreat!

While at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, our guests at Porini Rhino Camp have enjoyed watching the puppies recently born to the Alpha female in the pack of Wild Dogs which have a den nearby. Photographer Paolo Torchio sent us these pictures taken earlier this month:

At our Nairobi Tented Camp we are pleased to say that we have added an extra tent taking the number of guest tents up from 8 to 9. This now allows us to take up to 18 guests, still keeping the camp small, cozy and intimate. The Nairobi National Park is Kenya’s oldest National Park and is teeming with wildlife. Rolling plains, riverine woodlands and thick bush-lined valleys are just some of the park’s varied habitats. The park is easily accessible from all of Nairobi whether arriving into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, from Wilson airport or travelling South, and from the city itself. There is no better way to start your holiday than by spending your first day at the Nairobi Tented Camp. It’s romantic, away from the bustle of staying in a city hotel, and very safe.

Safety and Security of Visitors to Kenya

On a more sombre note, for some time now Kenya has featured in negative reports in the international media following a number of isolated incidents of terrorism in some parts of the country in the recent past and the incident at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi a year ago, resulting in travel warnings being issued by several countries. This has caused people to worry that all of Kenya may be unsafe when the reality is that nearly all such incidents have been in places far away from any areas where we send tourists such as near the border with Somalia or in the back street slum areas of Mombasa or the suburb of Eastleigh in Nairobi.

The present travel advice on places to avoid is as follows and we adhere to this strictly:

  • Avoid travel within 60 kms of the border with Somalia and avoid Garissa District – note: these are remote areas, with no tourism and we do not go anywhere near there.
  • Avoid Lamu County on the northern stretch of Kenya’s coast.
  • At the present time avoid Mombasa island and its environs between Mtwapa and Tiwi.
  • Avoid the suburb of Eastleigh in Nairobi.

The British government is giving support to Kenyan government efforts to ensure heightened security at airports in Kenya by providing equipment and training to assist in broadening aviation security detection capability at airports across Kenya. The British High Commissioner commented, "Aviation security is another vital element in protecting all our citizens from acts of terrorism. Security is a priority for us all, so I am delighted that the UK Government continues to work closely with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority in order to further strengthen the existing aviation security regime in Kenya."

Further good news is that the British government has just revised its Travel Advisory for Kenya on 29 September and has now lifted all warnings against travel to Nairobi (apart from the suburb of Eastleigh which should be avoided). The British High Commission in Nairobi indicated that they expect this will help visitors to be more confident when flying into the international airport and transferring to Nairobi hotels before going on safari. At the same time the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office clarified that there are no travel warnings on any of the famous safari destinations in Kenya and confirmed that all of the following may be visited without restriction: Aberdare National Park, Amboseli, Laikipia, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Meru, Mount Kenya, Samburu, Shimba Hills, Tsavo.

At the coast, there are no restrictions on the airports of Mombasa, Malindi and Ukunda and there are no restrictions on beach resorts at Malindi, Kilifi, Watamu to the north of Mombasa or Diani and Galu to the south.

Kenya has had over 2 million visitors from overseas in the last two years who have had a great time here. Something we hear over and over again from our guests is that they were initially a little hesitant about coming because they had been made to feel anxious by comments from family and friends before they left home but after arriving here they just couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about, felt very safe and found the Kenyan people to be charming and hospitable. They all tell us they plan to come back again as soon as they can!

We live in Nairobi, visit all our leading safari destinations on a regular basis and look after thousands of customers every year. We are here to take care of you from the moment you arrive at the airport in Nairobi until you leave at the end of your safari and your safety and enjoyment is our top priority. We look forward to welcoming you on a safari here in Kenya soon!

With best wishes,

Aleema

Kenya did well at the recent 21st Annual World Travel Awards, considered the Oscars of the travel industry: the Kenya Tourist Board picked up the award for Africa’s Leading Tourist Board, Kenya Airways bagged Africa’s Leading Airline for business class travellers and we are proud to announce that for the second year in a row, Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps won the award for Africa’s Leading Tented Safari Camp. Kenya’s Athletes Win Again!

Our athletes were in the news again when Marathon runner Dennis Kimetto broke the marathon world record in Berlin last week, winning the race in a time of 2 hours 2 minutes and 57 seconds, knocking 26 seconds off the record and becoming the first man ever to run a marathon in less than two hours and three minutes. His fellow Kenyan, Emmanuel Mutai, came second and also beat the old record! Before becoming a full-time athlete in 2008, Dennis had been a farmer, growing maize and watching after cows in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. He has now won 3 marathons (Tokyo 2013, Chicago 2013, Berlin 2014). His wife Caroline fainted after watching her husband break the world record on TV. "I am so happy, I don’t even have words to describe it. I can’t even believe it," she said after recovering from the shock of seeing him smash the record. Well done to Dennis Kimetto for keeping Kenya’s flag flying high!

Feature of the Month: Why I love the Maasai Mara

1289.jpg

The wildebeest migration, hot air balloon rides, roaring felines, incredible chase, and game drives…these are countless reasons why we love the Maasai Mara. Our marketing executive recently visited the Maasai Mara and shares with us her experience of why the Maasai Mara still remains as one of the world’s best places to visit. Read more.

Conservancy Update – Visit to Selenkay with Iloirero Primary School

As part of our continued efforts to expose youth to wildlife and the Porini Conservancy Concept, we recently invited the highest performing students of Iloirero Primary School to the Selenkay Conservancy and Porini Amboseli Camp.

1312.jpg
Students of the Iloirero Primary School line up before a game drive

The students, accompanied by their headmaster and teachers, enjoyed a game drive inside the conservancy, which included an up close encounter with the bachelor male elephants who are regularly seen by guests. The vehicles then headed back to camp where the students were shown around the camp and introduced to various staff members (the majority of whom come from the local area), who also gave brief talks on how they came into their respective careers. These included guides, spotters, chefs as well as rangers. The staff and students sat together and enjoyed a hearty meal before the students were taken back to school.

Right: It is lunch time at Porini Amboseli Camp

It is our deepest hope that these students have learnt something new as many of them have never truly experienced a game drive nor do they understand the importance of the conservancy concept. This little field trip should provide a renewed appreciation for wildlife, and the various career opportunities that the tourism sector has to offer.

Action in Porini – Up close and Personal

Photographer Christian Ghammachi recently rode through our Porini Camps on his Two Wheels Across adventure across Africa. He has captured the spectacular world of the Selenkay Conservany, home to Porini Amboseli Camp.

About us – nominee for Ecotourism Guide of the Year
1307.jpg
Wilson’s unique ability to spot everything everywhere is what makes him different from other guides. He allows every day to unfold naturally. "Every day, nature is different" – he doesn’t look for the same animals in the same place. He uses his knowledge of animal behaviour to track and find the animals and his keen hearing to track birds and reptiles that are lurking nearby. His passion is revealed as he talks to guests who have the pleasure of meeting him and going on a safari with him. He describes every moment with fervour and talks to his clients about everything they are seeing. When on site, he uses the presence of scavengers like jackals, hyenas, vultures and tawny eagles to spot the larger, hidden predators. His incredible knowledge and passion for the wild makes Wilson a favourite amongst his peers, workmates, elders, employers and guests. We want to wish Wilson good luck and hope he wins the celebrated award for Guide of the Year.
