Greetings Porini Enthusiast!

As we approach the end of 2014, we continue monitoring the security situation throughout the country to ensure that all the areas where we operate safaris are considered safe for visitors and to adhere to travel advice designed to enhance the security of tourists coming to Kenya in view of the increased threat of global terrorism now prevalent throughout most parts of the world.

We are pleased to note that the British government has continued giving support to Kenya to ensure the highest levels of security are in place in our international airports. Last week a team of Kenyan aviation security personnel from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) successfully completed aviation security training in the UK. The Kenyan team worked closely with senior UK Government Transport officials at Glasgow International Airport, to further their operational aviation security knowledge and to gain high level practical auditing/compliance experience of airport security processes.

All 5 Kenyan delegates passed the ‘Inspectors’ training with flying colours and the tips and best practices picked up by all will assist in strengthening National Quality Control Systems at Kenya’s airports.

Speaking during the training, a UK Government official noted, "Aviation security is another vital element in protecting all our citizens from acts of terrorism. Security is a priority for us all, so I am delighted that the UK Government continues to work closely with the KAA and the KCAA in order to further strengthen the existing aviation security regime in Kenya."

We are also co-operating closely with our partners in the tourism industry and following the guidance of relevant government authorities to ensure a safe and trouble free visit for all our visitors. Everyone passing through our camps say that they are leaving with nothing but incredible memories and hope to return.

We had a group of friends who stayed with us at Porini Lion Camp this Thanksgiving, and had this to say about their visit: My friends and I had a wonderful 4 days at Porini Lion Camp. Our guides and generally the service was fantastic! Everyone was both very friendly and knowledgeable. I have done three other safaris previously, and this was the one where I saw the most animals. Our guides were receptive to our animal preferences, and truly wanted us to have a great experience. I would highly recommend this camp!"

An Australian visitor had this to say about Porini Amboseli Camp when she stayed with us 10 days ago: "After a week of safaris through Tanzania staying in beautiful hotels this place was a breath of fresh air. The camp has just a few tents which are spaced adequately away but close enough. You cant walk from your tent to the main mess tent at night without a guide so there is a whistle in each tent to use to get the attention of a guide to walk with you (due to safety reasons – animals could be close). 2 bucket shower is ample time to wash hair and soap up etc. John was in charge while we were there and organised everything from meals to programming guides and daily activities. Our guide was Dennis and our driver was Malita. We had 2 fabulous nights here and wished we stayed longer. We laughed/had camp fires stories/every meal was first class due to the 3 chefs on site. An extremely well run experience. Our first camping experience on safari ever. Solar powered so no electricity for a hairdryer. Flushing toilet. Kept very clean and tidy. Thank you personally to our driver and guide for making our experience a memorable one."

With best wishes for the festive season,

Aleema

Conservancy Update – Eye Clinic in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy

October 15th marked the beginning of a partnership between Operation Eyesight Universal, Gamewatchers Safaris and Porini Safari Camps.

Between October 15th and 16th the Operation Eyesight team based in Narok trained a number of people in Aitong to become dedicated Community Health Workers. The Community Health Workers were to mobilise communities in and around the OlKinyei area to attend the clinic, which was to be held at both the OlKinyei Dispensary and the Nkoilale Community Health Centre. Social mobilisation took place between October 19th and 25th. The two main ailments requiring surgery and on which the Community Health Workers were trained on identifying were Cataracts and Trachoma Trichiasis (TT – inturned eye lashes).

The clinic began on October 26th with the arrival of the Operation Eyesight Universal Team. The team were comprised of 8 medical practitioners specialising in eye ailments, led by Dr John Sironka. The first day was slow due to it being a market day, however, there were a number of patients that passed through the doors of the Nkoilale Health Centre. Over the next 4 days attendance picked up as word spread about the eye clinic and patients were also being seen at the OlKinyei Dispensary.

The 8 doctors were hosted at our Porini Mara Camp, who we also assisted in transporting patients from the OlKinyei Dispensary to the Nkoilale Community Health Centre, and back to their respective villages following completion of their surgeries.

About us – Meet Andrew Saruni – NTC’s super cool guide!

Andrew was born and raised in Narok. He is a Silver rated guide, but has largely acquired all his guiding and training skills on the job. He holds a diploma in journalism from Kenya Polytechnic University. His aim for 2014 is to achieve a gold rating certification. Andrew has a sensitive eye out in the field, and photographers often request for him when they came down. He is also part of the East African Ornithological Society, Narok County Youth-Led Group, Maa Association and Friends of City Park. His favourite bird is the Lilac-Breasted Roller and his favorite mammal is the Leopard. One of his best wildlife experiences was watching a Pygmy Falcon, the smallest raptor in East Africa kill a male Red-Headed Agama, a colorful lizard larger than the 8" Falcon. Andrew joined us at Porini Rhino Camp in 2011 and is now a full time guide with us. He is currently based at the Nairobi Tented Camp.
