CITES: If you ever wonder why CITES is so ineffective, this may open your eyes to part of the problem:
It’s worth remembering the fate of the world’s wildlife is often in the hands of people who have no particular interest in wildlife, let alone the illegal wildlife trade. Doubtless, some could not recognise a gorilla from a chimpanzee. For these CITES country officials (Management Authorities – MA’s), it’s just another all-expenses paid conference: If they say and do nothing it keeps them out of any possible controversy and future work. They get paid the same whether they ask a question or not. In other words; they, too, are being rewarded for failure. It’s not right, is it? Things need to change, don’t they? Will the current Chairman of the Standing Committee get a grip of this shameful and disastrous (for wildlife) situation?
