When it comes to CITES and its leadership

the biggest mistake you can make is to judge

either by its intentions, not its results.

There have been dozens of news reports this week concerning Prince William’s comments about ivory and China. Can you find a single such report on the CITES web site news section? http://www.cites.org/ No? Now, why might that be? Even in China and Vietnam you can read these news reports, but not on the CITES secretariat web site. Do you think the secretariat is attempting to shield China from such critical reports? What other reason could there be for the absence of any of these VERY high profile news reports concerning China from their web site, Facebook page and Twitter?. Does this make you suspicious as to who’s side the CITES secretariat are on?

DO YOU HAVE ANY CONFIDENCE

LEFT IN CITES AND THESE OFFICIALS?

These three men are very influential over which countries are punished, or not, by CITES.

No one, least of all us, is asking these men to do more than enforce the CITES Convention – which is what they are paid very well to do.

Why, in Malaysia, is the government so reluctant to crush its 2000 plus pieces of ivory? Could it be because corrupt officials’ have stolen some? The same government don’t want any external audit of the ivory. Despite this, the CITES Standing Committee are expected to NOT sanction Malaysia – a country, not unlike China, CITES knows full well has been up to its neck in the illegal wildlife trade for a decade or more. With no punishment from CITES, is it any wonder the illegal wildlife trade has exploded in scale under the present CITES administration?
