Wildlife Legislation Lacking: Armenia Falters Regarding its CITES Obligations

extract: When it comes to legislation preventing the illegal trade in wildlife, Armenia is dragging its feet. This sobering evaluation, that legislation on the books in Armenia does meet the requirements for the effective implementation of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), was part of a report released this week by the CITES National Legislation Project (NLP). (NA comment: Armenia has nothing to worry about. CITES won’t even sanction China and Vietnam, so there is not a snowball’s chance in hell it will ever punish Armenia, is there?) http://hetq.am/eng/news/60066/wildlife-legislation-lacking-armenia-falters-regarding-its-cites-obligations.html

The end for one of the last giants still standing in Asia’s forests? extract: concerning the pressing threat to one of the few large hardwood tree species remaining in South-East Asia’s forests from the rapacious furniture industries of China and Vietnam as other sought-after hardwood species in the region approach commercial and biological extinction.

EIA

http://eia-international.org/the-end-for-one-of-the-last-giants-still-standing-in-asias-forests (NA comment: China and Vietnam appear regularly, possibly more so than all the other countries in the world added together, in the news for all the wrong reasons. Neither has been threatened with sanctions. Critical news reports of China’s complicity in the wildlife trade are still barred from appearing on the CITES Secretariat’s web site – does that concern you? Is it fair that the secretariat can and does exercise a bias towards China – and Vietnam?) see for yourself http://www.cites.org/eng/news/cuttings/index.php

‘Penalise those exploiting loophole’. SABAH/MALAYSIA extract:

Sabah’s iconic wildlife are on the brink of extinction, no thanks to the "greed" of poachers and natives who have captured the animals to be sold in the local market, instead of personal consumption, he pointed out. (NA comment: Exactly what we have been telling him for a long time. Trouble is, he is big on words and weak on action. i.e. Like a lot of others, he does not walk his talk. Much of Sabah’s iconic wildlife has been killed off while he has been minister. Poachers and loggers appear not to fear him because the law has rarely been enforced in the past. http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=99563

Badge of dishonor – Four more cops arrested for possession of rhino horn‚ corruption.

The Hawks in Mpumalanga arrested four police constables on Wednesday‚ who had allegedly seized a rhino horn and cash from a suspected vehicle‚ demanding a bribe for the rhino horn’s release.

The four constables‚ who are attached to the Middelburg Flying Squad Unit‚ were allegedly on duty when they stopped a vehicle with five suspects. On searching the vehicle‚ they found a rhino horn and cash and confiscated it.

Instead of arresting the five suspects‚ the four constables demanded payment‚ taking with them a cellular phone from one of the five suspects.

The five suspects handed themselves over to the members of the Organised Crime Unit in Middleburg and gave a detailed story on what had happened.

The members‚ with the cooperation of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)‚ agreed on a sting operation.

The operation led to the arrest of the four members and the seizure of the rhino horn.

The suspects‚ whose ages range from 32 to 36 years‚ are set to appear in the Middelburg Regional Court on Friday‚ facing charges of corruption and dealing in rhino horn.

The five suspects have agreed to testify against the four members.

Another day in another country. Talk, talk, talk, talk …..: Did you ever

see a wildlife ranger, at one of these ‘events? It’s all business class

travel, 5* hotels and no one has ever written to us and explained what even one event like this has ever achieved – by which we mean, has a conference, workshop etc ever saved an animal and if so at what cost? Is the wildlife trade declining or increasing?

speaking of which …………………..

Protecting Indonesia’s forests is a key issue for Paris climate talks (NA comment: all this talking must beat working for a living and being held accountable for results. No one in the Indonesian government is going to give a damn about what is said in Paris. Would you? We can recall deforestation in Indonesia being ‘talked’ about for at least 20 years, in which time and despite hundreds of millions of donors dollars, things are now worse than disastrous, aren’t they? Do you want to hazard a guess how much money Indonesians have given to save THEIR forests?) http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/may/08/protecting-indonesias-forests-is-a-key-issue-for-paris-climate-talks?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=dlvr.it

Tanzania parks hold-off on drones to combat elephant poaching. EXTRACT: Tanzania has lost half of its wildlife population since 2009, when the pachyderm population was estimated at 109,000, according to the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency. The East African nation is the largest source of poached ivory and China is the biggest importer of smuggled tusks, the agency said in November. http://www.timeslive.co.za/sundaytimes/stnews/international/2015/05/08/tanzania-parks-hold-off-on-drones-to-combat-elephant-poaching#.VUzgLLzZk_0.twitter

Vulpro Npo: SOUTH AFRICA

66 Vultures were found poisoned on a private game farm near Hoedspruit. Vultures of all ages were affected which ultimately affects this year’s current breeding season. It is simply not possible for vultures to sustain these kinds of losses and the threat for vulture species to decline below sustainable levels is a very real threat in our lifetime. Unfortunately we simply do not receive the same interest from authorities for vulture poisonings as poached rhinos are receiving and receive on a daily basis.

CITES OFFICIALS CAN EASILY STOP THIS TRADE. IF THEY HAD AN OUNCE OF CONCERN FOR ELEPHANTS, THEY WOULD BLOCK THE SHIPMENT, WOULDN’T THEY?

YES – CITES OFFICIALS – ONCE AGAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF EXPANDING THE

CRUEL WILDLIFE TRADE.
