Weekend or not, the bad news just keep coming in ….
in the spotlight today ……………………
CYPRUS: ‘Deceived by the government’ on bird hunting. EXTRACT: According to BirdLife Cyprus, 2014 was the worst year for bird trapping since a record 900,000 songbirds were killed by poachers in the British base area of Dhekelia alone last autumn.
That is three times the number since monitoring began in 2002.
It is estimated that 1.5 million songbirds are killed each year by poachers. Ambelopoulia can go for up to €80 a kilo.

Poachers Are On Track To Kill More Rhinos This Year Than Ever (NA COMMENT: Because of zero law enforcement in China and Vietnam and that happens because of zero enforcement of the CITES convention – doesn’t it? Who do you hold accountable?)

“The objective of CITES is to ensure that wild fauna and flora is not unsustainably exploited through international trade.”says John Scanlon, CITES http://cites.org/eng/cites_sg_wto20
SO: WHAT DO YOU NOW THINK OF CITES LACK OF CONVENTION ENFORCEMENT?
Achim Steiner of UNEP is ultimately responsible for
CITES and its shortcomings.
How many animals have been murdered or caught
alive while he’s been in charge?
Why does he allow China, Malaysia and Vietnam to
escape sanctions?
Namibia, We Have a Crisis. extract: It is no secret that Chinese mining companies have moved closer to rhino and elephant areas. Also, some Chinese nationals are behind bars facing charges of possession of ivory and rhino horn. This is no coincidence. It should also give us a lead on how to tackle the crisis. We know that the demand for rhino horn is increasing in the East despite no scientific proof that it can cure illnesses like cancer or that it acts as an aphrodisiac. http://allafrica.com/stories/201505151714.html

YES – CITES OFFICIALS – ONCE AGAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF EXPANDING THE
