Another dose of bad news about poaching and other wildlife crimes
in the spotlight today ……………………
Stressed elephants at Bukit Gambang Safari Park. MALAYSIA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YGJjslCaOI&feature=youtu.be (NA COMMENT: Despicable cruelty condoned by the same completely useless wildlife authority that represent CITES in Malaysia. This safari park was opened after a new law came into effect in 2010. This one example is a small part of a more comprehensive report on this park and also part of in a series of reports on Malaysian zoos.
On paper the law is clear and good. In practice the wildlife authorities don’t enforce it. We mention this because you need to know this is also the same wildlife authority – Perhilitan/NRE – that refuses to allow an independent audit of its ivory in storage ….most probably because someone has given away or sold some of it: Will CITES now punish Malaysia or, as has happened in each of the last 20 years, will CITES continue to turn a blind eye? What do you think?
It would be impossible to exaggerate how ineffective and complicit the Malaysian wildlife authorities are in animal cruelty and the wildlife trade. The minister responsible is useless.)

Oil palm company accused of violating RSPO, IPOP standards in Indonesia. extract: Wilmar said that following an earlier Greenomics report on SSS, it had suspended its dealings with the company pending the latter’s completion of a high-carbon stock (HCS) assessment, after which Wilmar had "reinstated buying, albeit in small quantities." (The term "HCS" generally refers to any forest more robust than shrubland and marks the IPOP companies’ cut-off point for "deforestation.") The spokesman did not address Greenomics’ finding that the supplier had continued to clear HCS forest through at least May 13, the date of the most recent satellite imagery provided in the report.
