Another dose of bad news about poaching,
wildlife and environmental crimes …
and kudos to Zimbabwe for bringing criminal
charges against the hunter who killed Africa’s
most famous lion king …
in the spotlight today ……………………
Malaysia-bound flyer held with suitcase full of star tortoise. EXTRACT: CHENNAI: Air customs officials at Chennai airport on Saturday seized 50 live star tortoises from a passenger headed to Kuala Lumpur. This is the third incident of smuggling foiled at the airport this month.
The tortoise species is protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and trade in the animals is banned under the Conventional on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
(NA COMMENT: yet another shipment on its way to Malaysia where the totally useless and/or complicit government authorities have failed to arrest and prosecute a single person. Yes: Some of the same people who represent CITES in Malaysia who still cover up their stash of ivory. Malaysia should have been kicked out of CITES a decade ago. Fellow CITES members appear to protect their own…..regardless of convention/law-breaking activities. Does this remind you of the Mafia? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Malaysia-bound-flyer-held-with-suitcase-full-of-star-tortoises/articleshow/48220382.cms
