No 483 Wildlife Trade News: 11th August 2015

Another dose of bad news about poaching,
environmental and wildlife crimes from
around the world

in the spotlight today ……………………

JAKARTA, INDONESIA: The notorious Jatinegara wildlife market last week.

On of two such markets in Jakarta (the other being ‘Pramuka’) BKSDA wildlife officials refuse to close down despite the criminality involved, despite the horrific conditions, despite appalling animal cruelty and despite Indonesia’s wildlife fast-disappearing wildlife from its natural habitats.

WHY WON’T BKSDA AND The Ministry of Forest and Environment

a) enforce the law? b) save Indonesia’s wildlife?

Is it due to laziness, corruption, or both?

These reports and photos are ONLY being shown in public because in private the

ministry and BKSDA officials have, so far, refused to take action against the

wildlife traders/traffickers.

Beyond Cecil: The illegal trade in wildlife has real consequences for the world by Achim Steiner/UNEP. (NA comment: If he REALLY is concerned, why doesn’t he persuade CITES to enforce sanctions? How many hundreds of thousands of ‘protected’ birds and animals have been killed and internationally traded, illegally, while Achim Steiner has been in his job? And how many countries have been punished? How many did you say?) http://www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2015/aug/10/illegal-trade-wildlife-cecil-the-lion-organised-crime-poaching

Environmental Investigation Agency. Latest from our colleagues at EIA US:

In collaboration with the Colombian human rights non-profit La Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz, EIA invites you to learn about the devastating impact that the growing palm oil sector in Colombia has had on the local communities of Mapiripan, Colombia.

This brief documentary, “Between Water and Oil Palm,” shows evidence that Italian-owned palm oil company Poligrow Ltd has forcibly displaced local farmers and damaged the water, land, and wildlife resources upon which the Jiw and Sikuani indigenous peoples depend for their livelihood.
