NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: Who Buys Ivory? You’d Be Surprised
A new international survey reveals what’s really driving the demand side of the ivory market.
WE ALL KNOW THE MAIN COUNTRIES WHO IMPORT IVORY,
DON’T WE?
WHAT WE DON’T KNOW IS: WHY CITES OFFICIALS THE WORLD OVER ALLOW THIS WHOLSALE SLUGHTER OF ELEPHANTS TO CONTINUE, WITHOUT EVER PUNISHING THOSE COUNTRIES WHO IMPORT THE IVORY.
ISN’T THIS AN EQUALLY BIG SCANDAL?
HOW MANY MORE ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS WILL BE SLAUGHTERED –
BEFORE CITES/UNEP OFFICIALS TAKE ACTION?
Plenty of CITES officials will be reading this.

No 486 Wildlife Trade News: 14th August 2015
Report: Rhino horns, elephant tusks shipment from Malaysia seized in Vietnam (NA COMMENT: Malaysia once again implicated in the illegal wildlife trade. How many more times must we see such headlines before CITES takes action against this country? Do you get the impression the CITES Standing Committee members and the Secretariat are relaxed about (not) enforcing the convention? All over the world we see wildlife decimated in large part because of poor or non-existing national law enforcement – is this really any different to CITES officials not enforcing the international convention?

DO YOU FEEL CITES ISN’T WORKING BECAUSE MANY CITES OFFICIALS WON’T ENFORCE THE CONVENTION?
DOES THIS MAKE THESE CITES OFFICIALS ANY DIFFERENT TO THOSE WHO ACTUALLY KILL ELEPHANTS, RHINOS, ETC?
THE KILLING WON’T STOP UNTIL THE DEMAND STOPS. WILL IT?

INDONESIA: Investigators from Indonesian NGO group SCORPION heard this week that species ‘officially’ classed as ‘protected’ in Indonesia have been removed from display. To buy a protected species a buyer now has to go to the home of a trader.
But, as you saw yesterday, Traffic share our concern for unprotected species as well.
We are also concerned at the cruelty and death rates of wildlife for sale
in this and other markets. Wildlife markets in Indonesia are like
zoos in Indonesia – HORRIFIC.
