UGANDA SET FOR INAUGURAL DRAGON BOAT RACE

The first ever Dragon Boat race will take place in Entebbe in a couple of days time, making Uganda only the second country in Africa to participate in such an event after South Africa.
Local teams are said to have been training up for the races for several weeks now and will meet a Chinese university team, reportedly coming to the country to test their skills against Ugandan boatmen.
At least thirty teams have registered for the races which are taking place on Lake Victoria off the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre compound.
At stake are not just trophies and honours for the winners but also a major step forward for Uganda as a country. International Dragon Boat Federation President Mr. Mike Thomas was quoted in local media promising Uganda an invitation to the next world championship races, should the organization and performances of the Ugandan races meet their standards and tick all the right boxes.
A source close to the Uganda Tourism Board indicated that should the races become a regular event it would feature in UTB’s annual events calendar and receive promotional exposure as part of the growing sports tourism segment the board has been promoting in past years.
