Satellite Stories: wildlife movement data brought to life
Ol Pejeta has some of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya, and each animal has its own story. Some are migratory; others rarely leave their burrow. Some are nocturnal, while others like to bask in the midday sun. But how do all these different species and stories interact and influence each other? What does a week in the life of Ol Pejeta’s ecosystem look like?

We’ve teamed up with Internet of Elephants on a project supported by the National Geographic Society to show you. “Satellite Stories” is an interactive data visualisation series showing seven days in the life of Ol Pejeta’s wildlife, as told through their movement data.

Fighting jiggers with JW Seagon
They sound like something from a horror film; tiny sand fleas that burrow into human flesh, lay eggs and multiply. But jiggers are a very real and very debilitating parasite for many rural communities – which is why we worked with JW Seagon, one of our corporate partners, to provide health care for 146 people affected by a recent outbreak on the Conservancy’s northern border.

Justin Mott's No Man's Land
Kindred Guardians: New York photography exhibition shines a light on rhino conservation
A New York gallery – Anastasia Photo – is teaming up with photographer Justin Mottto raise awareness on the plight of the northern white rhinos, giving viewers an intimate insight into what it takes to keep them happy, healthy, and safe from poachers. Mott shot the material for the exhibition, No Man’s Land, on a recent trip to Ol Pejeta, and hopes to contribute some of the proceeds towards the development of IVF techniques that could save the northern white rhino from total extinction. Anastasia Photo is located on 143 Ludlow Street in New York City. No Man’s Land opened on the 6th of June and will run until the 15th of September 2019.
How Your Next Cup of Chai Could Save a Rhino

The Banda School
Nairobi school students raise USD 1,000 for Conservation
We’re thrilled that students from The Banda School in Nairobi have chosen Ol Pejeta to be their fundraising focus this year. Their recent fundraising day featured activities that educated students about different wildlife species, and a cake sale. The superstar students raised a total of Ksh 94,220 for our conservation activities, which has funded a nebulizer (used to deliver medication to wildlife), and binoculars for the rhino patrol unit.

As a thank you, Ol Pejeta hosted the students and some of their teachers for a morning in June, where they met our anti-poaching team, some of the dogs in our K-9 unit, and got to visit the last two northern white rhinos.

Thank you, The Banda School, for your support!

Next generation of K-9 rangers born at Ol Pejeta
Our team of working dogs make a huge difference in our ability to track, apprehend, and deter poachers. Their speed, agility and incredible sense of smell makes them more effective, and let’s face, a lot cuter, than any piece of man-made technology in so many conservation security situations. That is why Ol Pejeta has partnered with Ol Jogi Conservancy to breed two of the best bloodhounds on the block, and we are delighted to be bringing up nine puppies that will go on to serve in K-9 units across the landscape.

Northern white rhino film ‘Kifaru’ creating a buzz beyond filmmaker’s “wildest dreams”
Already winner of 14 awards at ten film festivals, the feature-length documentary about two rhino caregivers at Ol Pejeta has gained more traction that even its creators imagined it would. KIFARU follows the lives of Joseph Thuita (Jojo) and James Mwenda; two members of Ol Pejeta’s rhino caretaker unit charged with caring for Sudan, the last male northern white rhino in the world. Spanning over the course of Jojo and James’ first four years on the job, KIFARU allows viewers to intimately experience the joys and pitfalls of wildlife conservation first-hand. Film creators Andrew Brown and David Hambridge have been touring the feature-length film, and invited James and JoJo along for the ride during April and May.

Awoke N’ Aware
Awoke N’ Aware are a fashion brand whose mission is “to save animals one piece of clothing at a time.” They make sustainable, ethical clothing and donate 15% of all their profits to conservation. The lucky winner was Rebekah Pongezi, who suggested the name ‘Thamani’ meaning precious. Rebekah not only wins an Awoke N’ Aware t-shirt, but also gets to actually name an Ol Pejeta rhino!
