NEW CHANCE AT SURVIVAL FOR THE NORTHERN WHITE RHINOS
Najin and Fatu are the last two northern white rhino in the world, both of them female. Sadly, neither of them are able to carry a pregnancy, but a groundbreaking procedure carried out on August 22nd means they still have the chance to mother the next generation of northern white rhinos. With both Najin and Fatu under general anaesthetic, a team of vets successfully harvested eggs from the females, in an operation that has never been attempted in this species before. The team was able to retrieve a total of 10 eggs, five from Najin and five from Fatu. Since then, 7 out of the 10 eggs (4 from Fatu and 3 from Najin) were successfully matured and artificially inseminated. This was achieved through ICSI (Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection) with frozen sperm from two different northern white rhino bulls, Suni and Saut, on Sunday, August 25th. This is the next critical step in hopefully creating viable embryos that can be frozen and then later on transferred to southern white rhino surrogate mothers. The results of possible embryo development are to be announced around September 10th.

ALU aims to develop three million ethical and entrepreneurial leaders for Africa and the world by 2035. This is a fantastic recognition of her sterling efforts and achievements thus far. Eva is looking forward to building her potential further and interacting with other like-minded students. She shared her story and inspiration with us and we wish her the best of luck in her studies.
WHY WE LOVE OL PEJETA BEEF
In today’s world, food traceability is becoming under ever greater scrutiny. There’s a growing conscience about health, environmental responsibility and – in the case of meat – how well the animals were treated in life. We are pleased to report that our beef, raised in harmony with wildlife under scrupulous holistic rangeland management, is not only better for you, but benefits the ecosystem within which it exists. Our cattle are treated with care and respect, spending their days out in the wide open spaces of Ol Pejeta under the 24 hour care of dedicated herders. PROVIDING CLEAN WATER TO OUR COMMUNITIES WITH WELL AWARE
World Water Week is the leading event for water topics globally. This year’s theme is an inclusive approach which includes how to make sure that the poor get better access to safe water and sanitation which is very close to home for us here on Ol Pejeta.
Clean water is a continuing challenge to the wellbeing of our more than 56,000 of our neighbours. Prolonged droughts, sporadic rainfall and climate change are having a huge impact on the availability of regular and clean water supply. That’s where Well Aware comes in. Through over 10 years of work in East Africa, Well Aware has provided more than a quarter of a million people with sustainable clean water. By combining Well Aware’s clean water expertise and Ol Pejeta’s community partnerships, together we plan to empower and enhance the wellbeing of thousands of our neighbors.

LEARNING TO LOVE LIONS
This year’s World Lion Day was celebrated in many ways and our community schools were not left behind. We support 36 schools in our community and make an effort to involve them, whenever possible, in days and events that are both educational and that create awareness about the conservation work we do – and how everyone can (and should) get involved.
We invited 50 pupils from Matanya school to spend World Lion Day with our Conservation Education team, to learn about the need to conserve lions and what role our felines play in our ecosystem. Many of these children have experienced human wildlife conflict first hand, so we believe it is vital to teach them all we know about mitigating human/wildlife conflict. It is important to create a conversation based around finding and sharing solutions, taking a look at the bigger picture and working together towards legitimate answers.
We had a wonderful day, including a game drive around the conservancy to spot lions, a presentation from our team, and a creative drawing and colouring-in session that lead to some fabulous pictures!
