Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Excellence Rewarded!
CLEAN SWEEP FOR OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY AT THE ECOTOURISM ECOWARRIOR AWARDS 2017 NANYUKI, KENYA, THURSDAY, 28 SEPTEMBER 2017 – Ol Pejeta Conservancy is extremely honoured to have won the overall prize at this year’s Ecotourism Kenya #EcoWarriorAwards. The awards were held last night at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi and were graced by the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Hon. Najib Balala and Principal Secretary for Tourism Fatuma Hirsi. Ol Pejeta also managed to win the top honours in both of the categories that we were nominated for, namely: Protecting Life on Land Award and Decent work and Economic Growth Award. Ol Pejeta’s Events Coordinator, Camilla McConnell, was on hand to receive the awards on behalf of the Conservancy. The awards recognise Kenyan tourism initiatives with good practices that have infused distinct Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their operations and can positively demonstrate and report tangible outcomes. In a world where resources are increasingly scarce, innovation is essential to ensure we are able to continue protecting and preserving biodiversity, whilst balancing the needs and interests of communities. Ol Pejeta has over the years implemented a novel conservation model that uses complementary enterprises such as tourism and livestock ranching to further wildlife conservation and community development. "I am extremely proud of my team. This is a tremendous achievement," said Richard Vigne, Ol Pejeta’s CEO. Congratulations must also go to El Karama Eco Lodge who won the category for Sustainable Consumption and Production. Laikipia has had a hard year and it is very encouraging that we continue to flourish despite these difficulties. We would also like to extend further congratulations to the runners up in each of our categories; Northern Rangelands Trust and Sirikoi Lodge for Decent Work and Safarilink Aviation and Gamewatchers Safaris for Life on Land. In the last five years, we have won the Private Conservancy of the Year award thrice and our latest wins are a testament to our continued dedication to excellence in sustainable tourism. We would like to thank Ecotourism Kenya for their efforts in promoting and rewarding these standards across the country; keeping Kenya’s tourism industry a key player on a global scale.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 90,000-acre wildlife conservancy located in central Kenya. Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in east Africa, home to the last three northern white rhinos on the planet and is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. Ol Pejeta integrates livestock with wildlife – both as a means to earn revenue for conservation but also as a rangeland management tool.
