WILD DOGS ON THE CONSERVANCY |
Laikipia is one of the best places in the world to see African wild dogs, and there are over 30 on Ol Pejeta. We are working hard to ensure our populations of this endangered animal remain stable so that we can continue to boast about our precious guests for years to come. |
 |
RANGERS PARADE |
Recently, 36 rangers proudly patrolled on the Ol Pejeta airstrip. The patrol marked the completion of 40 hours of staff training for them. The training centered around wildlife monitoring skills and wildlife law enforcement, as well as professionalism and responsibilities as a wildlife ranger. |

Dear Friend of Ol Pejeta: |
New Stoves Paving the Way for Healthier Communities |
The German NGO Ofenmacher is distributing a fuel-efficient stove, which provides a healthier, more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional open charcoal burners. They initially trialled with remote communities in Nepal, and such was its success that they have now brought it to Kenya.
So far, Ofenmacher have trained 10 stove builders – six women and four men – and aim to have at least 100 stoves built in the communities surrounding Ol Pejeta by March this year. They are being well received by the Ol Pejeta communities, who are embracing the new stoves. |

Beatrice Ekomwa from Debatas and Katharina Dworschak from "Die Ofenmacher e.V.". The stove is in Beatrice’s home. It is also the first one she built after the training. |
Male Southern White Rhino Introduced in Endangered Species Boma |
At the end of last year, we announced our drastic decision to introduce a male southern white rhino to the two female northern whites, Fatu and Najin, in a last-ditch effort to save the northern white rhino. Despite the fact that Suni, one of the males, was seen mating with Najin in 2012, there have still been no successful pregnancies, and time is running out.
On the 25th January a fine and fertile southern white male was translocated from neighbouring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to the endangered species enclosure on Ol Pejeta.
If breeding is successful, the hope is that the two females can produce several offspring through ‘inter-crossing’ the subspecies in this way. |
 |
Visitors are welcome to the Conservancy to visit the Endangered Species Boma – home to the northern white rhinos – and get up close and personal with the four animals. |
