Baby rhino gets Starr connections |
Beatlemania has spread to Kenya, as an unlikely baby is named after one of the most successful drummers in UK music history. Ol Pejeta and The Nobelity Project have named an abandoned rhino calf in honor of former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who has been speaking out against rhino poaching. It is hoped this will raise awareness of the plight of the rhinos in Africa.

A bigger playpen for the northern white rhinos |
Last month, the Perfect World Foundation contributed US$3,500 to make the lives of the northern white rhinos on Ol Pejeta a little more perfect. The money was dedicated to new fencing for the endangered species enclosure, which will give Sudan, Fatu and Najin more space to graze, and access to shade.

How well do you know the kori bustard?
Male kori bustards are the heaviest flying birds on the planet. They can weigh up to 40 pounds; twice as much as female bustards! Males are typically around 3 feet tall, and spend around 70% of their life on the ground. They feed on insects, small reptiles, and rodents.
Kori bustards are actually listed as near threatened by International Union for Conservation of Nature, but a few can be spotted on the plains of Ol Pejeta.

Spotlight on drip irrigation
Donations from partners have allowed Ol Pejeta to supply 1,300 drip kits to 18 surrounding communities. Lengetia Farm, through a donation by Kenya Commercial Bank, initiated a revolving fund which was used to provide kitchen garden drip kits – now accessed by more than 3,000 farmers.
Drip irrigation has enabled farmers to move away from riverbank areas, reducing illegal river water extraction.

Forest fun for Ol Pejeta staff |
Last Friday, several Ol Pejeta staff members found themselves suspended 40 feet above a forest canopy. Some alternated between nervous laughter and terrified silence, others spent their time reassuring their colleagues. Nothing like putting the fear factor into a good day of team building!
