An aged Fokker 50c, owned and operated by StarSky Aviation of Somalia, crashed not long after leaving the ground and crashed into the sea as the plane apparently attempted to return to the airport. The aircraft, registered as 60=YAS, MSN f20177 and first flown in 1990, i.e. 35 years ago, took off from Mogadishu’s Adde International Airport (IATA: MGQ – ICAO:HCMM) and was supposed to fly to Gualaco Airport (IATA: GUO).

While the aircraft was all but destroyed did all 55 passengers and crew on board escape the stricken plane without major injuries.

An air accident investigation is now going underway to establish the cause of the accident with initial observer voices pointing to a technical failure of yet unspecified origin.

Somalia, like South Sudan, have serious air accident records and much is attributed to lack of competent oversight and lack of determined enforcement of standing regulations.
