The theme of this year’s Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo, aka POATE, is #responsibletourism, a recently coined catch phrase Uganda has latched on to.
The overall meaning of responsible tourism in Uganda has been described as:
- Slowing down the pace of a safari so you spend longer in each destination (reducing the carbon footprint of a tour creates an opportunity for deeper engagement with the destination and its people).
- Ensuring great apes are respected at all times: trackers should keep a minimum of 10 metres from gorillas and chimps at all times.
- Eliminating single use plastic from safari vehicles and tours.
These are just a few of the many ways one can make tours more responsible – but there’s so much more one must think about – and commit to addressing!

POATE will take place at the Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo, Kampala between 23rd to 25th of May 2024.
