Porini Camps expand to Meru

The cottages are built with canvas and made of sustainably grown wood, raised on platforms. 5 of the tents are offering a river view over the Kindani River and 2 of the tents are providing a forest view. The rooms are large, and set at different levels blending with the tree canopy. 2 of the rooms qualify as 2 roomed family units.

The very design of the camp, contemporary with a strong theme of Africa, is pleasant without being intrusive. Add to that a swimming pool to dream of (there is no shortage of water here), a well-stocked bar and restaurant area and numerous nature trails for you to explore and one can only start to imagine what a stay at Porini’s latest addition to their stable will be like.

It is fringed on its western boundary by the chain of the Nyambeni Hills which rise up to 2500 meters above sea level. These hills, with pockets of protected forests at their top, act as a formidable water catchment system. They are the source of as many as 14 rivers that eventually cut across the National Park itself.

Meru offers guests a great wilderness experience away from the crowds and made famous by the movie ‘Born Free‘ about George Adamson and Elsa the Lioness. Excursions can be organized to see Elsa’s grave and Adamson’s camp at an added extra cost.

This extremely diverse vegetation type and cover is mirrored by a likewise abundance and diversity of wildlife. In addition Meru is part of a greater conservation area being contiguous with Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves and Kora National Park to its south making the whole protected area at about 4000 km2.

Guests may decide to eat in the main area or beside the swimming pool, in the privacy of the terrace of their room or with other guests whom they like, or even have a meal in the bush! The choice is the guests – and that at every meal time when the chef surprises guests with a selection of gourmet delicacies.

The swimming pool is situated next to the stream, and surrounded by comfortable wooden decking. The pool blends in with the sight of the river running a few feet away, giving visitors the feeling that they are swimming as a creature of the equatorial forest at one with nature.

This African adventure will start in Nairobi National Park then continue to Selenkay Conservancy, Amboseli National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia, Meru National Park and then to Ol Kinyei & Naboisho Conservancies and the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve at special introductory rates.

Meru is famous as the area where Joy & George Adamson raised and released their pet lioness “Elsa”, the subject of the international best-selling book ‘Born Free’ and the Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Despite this claim to fame, the Park does not attract a great number of visitors, so it is ideal for safari enthusiasts who want to enjoy a quieter yet still exceptionally good wildlife experience.

At the camps all meals, drinks (wine, gin & tonic, beer, sodas, mineral water), day and night game drives by 4×4, guided walks and sundowners are included in the price which represents a huge saving on normal rates.
