Porini Camps / Gamewatcher Kenya News Updates

Dear ATCNews Readers,
I hope that you and your families have enjoyed the festive season, and as we leave behind the extraordinary year of 2020 we can embrace this new year with a positive outlook and confidence that better days are ahead for us all.

Nature is thriving here in our national parks, game reserves and wildlife conservancies.

?Our Porini Safari Camps have been hosting visitors for several months now and our guests have enjoyed escaping from the restrictions that apply back home and getting close to nature, which is always good for refreshing the spirits.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, ever since international flights to Kenya started again in August, overseas visitors have been arriving to stay with us from all over the world including the USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, South Africa, India, Hong Kong and China. All who have joined us have been rewarded with some outstanding wildlife viewing in and around our conservancies.

"A much needed Covid therapy for me! Worth every minute, made my trip from Dubai so rewarding. I can confidently say that the food in this camp is the best in Kenya. Asante sana",
(Soma Mukherjee at Porini Cheetah Camp, December 2020)
"Thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful time here. The staff was brilliant. Our drivers were exceptional and their knowledge was beyond what we would have expected. I love the whole concept of the conservancy working along side the people and wildlife. It was brilliant, my only regret is that I cannot stay longer",

New cubs for "Fig"

Past and future Porini Lion Camp guests will be pleased to hear that "Fig", one of our resident female leopards, is successfully rearing more cubs. Our safari guides and guests have been treated to some lovely sightings of the family in Olare Motorogi Conservancy.

Take a look at this wonderful video of Fig and her cubs filmed by Swati Prasad Siddharth late last month: Fig & Cubs in Olare Motorogi Conservancy (opens in YouTube).

New Camera Trap in Selenkay Conservancy

We have been enjoying some wonderful images from the camera trap that has been recently set up overlooking the waterhole in Selenkay Conservancy. The device lets us uncover the nightly goings-on in the conservancy and learn more about the fascinating animals that reside here.

We have put together a short video compilation of some of the camera’s clips including large tuskers and a giraffe enjoying the waterhole, and also a striped hyena which we were delighted to see as these are rarely observed and classed as near-threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Treating an injured elephant in Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Last week, the rangers patrolling Ol Kinyei Conservancy discovered an elephant with a serious wound to its stomach.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Vet and the team at Mara Elephant Project were informed, and they attended to the patient who was sedated and successfully treated.

The rangers and safari guides of our wildlife conservancies play a vital role in observing the welfare and behaviour of various species and work closely with the Mara Elephant Project and our other conservation partners.
