Dear ATC Readers,
We are continuing to enjoy high season here in Kenya, where the conservancies and parks are brimming with wildlife. Guests at our Porini Safari Camps in particular have had some wonderful game-viewing in the past few weeks. Our safari guides are always keen to show visitors the varied wildlife, and they also enjoy sharing their images from the daily game-drives and guided walks. The following images are by Meshack Sayialel and they were taken whilst on drives from Porini Lion Camp (Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Masai Mara). |

Migration, Migration, Migration … don’t just follow the herd!
Kenya’s many attractions include the annual Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara – usually between July and October – and there is a (somewhat misguided!) belief that this is the best time to visit. However, there is more to Kenya than the Migration – and there are huge advantages in visiting at other times of year. One of Kenya’s best-kept wildlife secrets is that there is actually another migration each year. This one, between January and March, is an east to west migration of wildebeest from the Loita plains to the Mara, traversing Ol Kinyei, Naboisho and Olare Motorogi Conservancies. During these hot, dry months, animals tend to congregate near water-holes which gives rise to excellent wildlife viewing. In June and from late November to December many of the animals have their young to coincide with the better grazing from new grass following the rains. Again, this brings wonderful opportunities for seeing plenty of wildlife. Elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes (and many other species) enjoy the sanctuary of our conservancies year-round. And – of course – visiting at quieter times of the year means that there are fewer tourist vehicles spoiling your view – and your flight and accommodation prices are much lower! You can see a list here of the 72 species of mammals which I have seen while staying at the different Porini Camps – that’s a huge variety of different animals to be seen on a safari round our camps, not forgetting that Kenya also has over 1,000 different species of birds! |
