Qatar’s new Hamad International Airport finally inches towards opening

QATAR AIRWAYS MOVE TO NEW AIRPORT NOW ‘A MATTER OF WEEKS

(Posted 23rd April 2014)

The long wait for the opening of Qatar’s new state of the art airport, Hamad International, is now, according to the latest information received, just over a month away. Some international airlines will in fact begin to shift their operation to the new airport from early May already and Qatar Airways is due to follow on the 27th of May, entering a new era of greatly enhanced ground operations with some of the arguably best ever premium lounges created by architects and designers.

While the present airport’s lounges operated by Qatar Airways already regularly captured awards from such organizations like Skytrax, the new facilities are almost certainly bound to be voted to the top of the rankings come the next award season.

Built to cater for QR’s continued expansion in terms of aircraft fleet and destinations will the new airport have two runways and offer better and faster transit facilities, crucial for a global hub airport competing with the other Gulf airlines like Emirates and Etihad, where similarly a new mega airport is now being launched in Dubai – Al Maktoum International, aka Dubai World Central, in Jebel Ali – and the existing airport in Abu Dhabi substantially expanded with a new mega terminal.

Travelers using Qatar Airways from the airline’s East African destinations Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam will no doubt be looking forward to seeing the new airport in action and not just reading about it in the media and in particular premium passengers can brace themselves for that special ‘Wow Experience’ when for the first time setting foot into the sparking new lounges and new duty free shops.

Meanwhile has Qatar Airways yesterday also confirmed that they will switch from the Airbus A320 to the larger Airbus A330 on the route to Vienna come September this year. The airline is also on course to launch three new long haul destinations to Miami on the 10th of June, to Haneda / Japan on the 18th of June and to Dallas / Fort Worth on the 01st of July.

With over 300 aircraft on order now is Qatar Airways, the Gulf’s only airline alliance member after joining OneWorld in October last year, poised to become one of the world’s leading airlines, operating one of the youngest fleets on the planet.
