#KENYA CABINET SECRETARY MACHARIA CONFIRMS UPGRADE OF REMAINING JKIA TERMINALS DUE FOR 2018

Work to modernize the remaining main terminal building at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, formerly known as Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 (Domestic) is due to go underway by mid next year, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport confirmed earlier in the week.
This will follow the successful completion of the now fully operational Terminal 1A, which has become the home of national airline Kenya Airways and their SkyTeam partners.
Terminals 1B, 1C and 1D, the new names of the existing terminals, will all undergo a major transformation which will see the latest technology introduced for check in counters, immigration, security checks, passenger waiting areas and lounges.
Additional work due to take place will be for the construction of a second runway, a project long overdue not just for capacity increases but to create redundancy when an incident shuts down the use of the hitherto single runway, prompting massive flight diversions at substantial cost.
Macharia also said when work is eventually completed will the handling capacity of JKIA rise to 12.5 million passenger per annum, retaining its standing as the largest aviation hub in Eastern Africa.
