REUNION’S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY LOOKS B BACK AT RECORD YEAR

For the first time in the island’s history was the threshold of one million overnight stays reached. A total of 1.025.100 nights were recorded during the year 2015. This number directly affected the occupancy of Reunion hotels which experienced an 11% growth compared over 2014.
In terms of occupancies, hotels ranked one or two stars and three stars classified hotel establishments recorded the best growth rates with 18% and 16% respectively. Occupancy increases remain however more moderate in most upscale hotels with only a 6% increase .
Hotels located in the West and South are the primary beneficiaries of this recovery in attendance which respectively observed a growth of 13% and 12%. Occupancy of Hotels in the Northeast region of the island grew by 7% .
An increase of 14% in the fourth quarter 2015 recorded the largest increase in six years
324 800 overnight stays were recorded in fourth quarter 2015 alone. All classified hotels on the island showed an increase by 14% compared to the fourth quarter of 2014.
This is the highest level in six years. Every month of the fourth quarter benefited by this increase, especially those of November and December with rises respectively + 17% and + 19%.
The increase in occupancy particularly benefited classified hotels ranked one or two stars and the three stars respectively experiencing rises of 31% and 32%. These are the western and southern based hotels which record the best gains ( + 17%).
The occupancy rate is fixed at 70% with an increase of 0.5 points compared to the fourth quarter of 2014.
Hotel occupancy by foreign customers experienced a rise of 8%. The German and Swiss tourists account for nearly 40% of foreign guests accommodated in hotels.
Compared to 2014, occupancy increased throughout 2015. The improvement began in the first quarter (+ 3%) was supported on the rest of the year (+ 14%) . The year 2015 was also characterized by the opening of five new hotels and several restaurants , representing an additional supply of about 500 rooms per day.
