Good news were received from the Rhino Fund Uganda, that a new rhino baby was born earlier today, bringing the overall number on the sanctuary to 31.
From humble beginnings with initially two breeding pairs, later boosted by Disney Animal Kingdom to three breeding pairs, have numbers steadily risen, making the breeding programme one of the most successful ones on record.
Mother Layolo and female baby Rhoda are doing well, according to information received from the RFU Executive Director Angie Genade.
She and her team, much maligned by a small section of business grabbers who want to reap where they did not sow, has to get the credit for this incredible performance over the years, with only one rhino ever lost due to the injuries sustained in a fight with the predominant bull, but no casualties as a result of poaching.
Angie and her entire team did unbelievable work over the past couple of months when due to lockdowns no visitors were able to come to the sanctuary, losing all the income and donations and having to literally live from hand to mouth, with government support to this prized institution also completely gone awol.
The sanctuary is again open for visitors and overnight stays are possible on the Amuka Safari Lodge on the sanctuary.
