CONSERVATION IN ACTION AS RWANDA’S RDB LAUNCHES CONSERVATION AWARDS
(Posted 30th August 2015)
The 11th edition of Kwita Izina, Rwanda’s erstwhile gorilla naming ceremony now turned into a week-long festival of conservation, will commence tomorrow, Monday 31st of August. This year will 24 newborn gorilla babies be named during the finale of the festival in Kinigi, at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters.
A series of events, including a conservation conference under the theme ‘A Conversation about Conservation’ is taking place at the Kigali Serena Hotel’s conference centre on the 03rd of September and RDB’s Faustin Karasira confirmed to this correspondent yesterday that some 200 delegates are expected to fill the room, listening to some eminent speakers and presenters. Overall were nearly 400 foreign hosted buyers, tour operators and of course the regional and international media invited to cover the week’s proceedings.
A wildlife art exhibition at Kigali’s public library will also run throughout the week, increasing awareness among Rwandans about the need to protect the country’s wildlife legacy.
Among the community projects set to be launched as part of the annual festival will a new public library be dedicated in Bisate, financed from both entrance receipt revenue sharing and with the assistance of the Karisoke Gorilla Research Centre.
Three individuals, their names still a closely guarded secret, will be honoured this year as RDB, short for the Rwanda Development Board, is launching their first ever such wildlife and conservation award scheme and to find out who has scooped the trophies, look no further but this space.
