SA trophy hunting export quotas revived after four-year freeze

Environment Minister Willie Aucamp has finally published proposed export quotas for elephant, black rhino, and leopard hunting trophies, a move wildlife ranchers and hunters have been demanding for years. The draft quotas are not yet in force and will need to go through a public participation process. Big game hunters and guides have long wanted the department to again set export quotas for the three high-value species, arguing the local hunting industry has lost up to R2.25 billion in direct revenue in the past five years. No export quotas for the tightly regulated species have been set since late 2021.
