Scientists Discover Elephants Use “Names” — And They Actually Respond When Called

If you call out your child’s name in a crowded park, you expect one small head to turn. Not every child. Just yours. That simple moment depends on something powerful: a name belongs to a specific person. New research suggests elephants may be doing something surprisingly similar. A 2024 peer-reviewed study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution found evidence that wild African savanna elephants use individually specific vocal calls that function much like names.
