Serena Hotels drop Mountain Lodge from their portfolio

MOUNTAIN LODGE REVERTS TO OWNERS AS SERENA OPTS OUT OF MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT

(Posted 09th February 2020)

Serena Hotels, after a 22 year partnership, has ended their management involvement in Mountain Lodge.
The company had notified the owners, Mountain Lodge Limited, of their decision already in December last year but only now made the split public to ensure a smooth transition of management.
Kenya’s Tourism Finance Corporation, the majority shareholder of Mountain Lodge Limited, has appointed an interim manager for the unit, which is located on the slopes of Mt. Kenya.
The lodge was initially constructed outside the Mt. Kenya National Park boundaries to make visits more affordable for locals and tourists, not having to pay park entrance fees at the time but at a later stage was a secondary buffer created around the national park boundaries as a conservation area, which saw Kenya Wildlife Service start to collect entrance fees. This catapulted the overall price range of Mountain Lodge sharply upwards and was seen as a major factor to depress demand and occupancies.
