TURNING THE TIDE ON PLASTICS
Eco-tourism is gradually becoming popular with travelers now seeking authentic experiences in establishments that have implemented sustainable initiatives that improve the lives of people, communities and protect the environment for future generations. Sustainable business practices form part of Serena Hotels ethos and is an intrinsic part to our day-to-day operations. Conscious efforts to reduce single-use plastic at the 24 Serena properties in Africa have been implemented in a phased manner since 2016. And to complement the deliberations at the first Global Blue Economy Conference held in Kenya last year; the UN Environment Clean Seas initiative held a plastic pollution awareness drive in January 2019 that saw Serena Beach Resort & Spa and Zanzibar Serena Hotel play a pivotal role in creating a plastic-free East African coastline. This reiterates the company’s commitment in aligning programs with the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals. Below is a highlight of the strides Serena Beach Resort & Spa has made to protect the coastline during 2018:

  • Eliminated 52,746 small guest amenities bottles in the resort rooms with refillable dispensers.
  • Eliminated 23,134 plastic water bottles from meeting rooms.
  • Eliminated 12,000 plastic straws.
  • Eliminated 81,000 single use bags.
  • Conduct monthly beach clean-ups in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service.

Backed by the UN Environment, ‘Flipflopi’, a dhow made of waste plastic and discarded flip-flops set sail from Mombasa to Zanzibar. After 14 days of sail, it docked at Zanzibar Serena Hotel where more awareness activities were held with dignitaries. In 2017, Serena Beach Resort & Spa used similar material as the ‘Flipflopi’ and 2,512 flip-flops were transformed to make a ‘Walk-In Chess Board’ based on the theme ‘Marine Life Vs Life Cycle of a Butterfly’ based on our conservation projects.
In February, Serena Hotels is participating and inviting supporters to visit marine photography exhibition by Prince Hussain Aga Khan dubbed “Fragile Beauty”. The exhibition is taking place at Khoja Mosque Nairobi throughout this month. It is aimed to create awareness to protect, conserve and manage our oceanic heritage and resources.
