Seychelles Presidential run off election, which was held between the 09th and 11th of October, brought a decisive result as United Seychelles’ candidate Dr. Patrick Herminie won the day with nearly 53 percent of the votes cast.
This is a moment of triumph of Dr. Herminie over the abuse of state power used by the defeated Wavel Ramkawalan who has Dr. Herminie charged with allegedly performing and using witchcraft – fake charges with were later dropped in court and were aimed to cripple Dr. Herminie’s campaign..
The politically motivated charges were the then highlight of the continued and growing abuse of state power, later even upped when opposition parties, candidates and supporters were subjected to intimidation by the Wavel regime’s brutal use of state organs – reminiscent of the bad old days of the Rene regime.
Said Dr. Herminie in his initial comments after the results were announced:
“The people have spoken. I am deeply humbled for the trust that the people have placed in me. I will be the president of all Seychellois, and I will end divisions by ceasing preferences, and giving everyone the opportunity to thrive,”.
These promises give hope to the Seychelles of a turnaround in economic fortunes as seen under the Wavel regime.
Dr. Herminie’s United Seychelles party also won a large majority in parliament, giving the newly elected president the ability to push through economic reforms – and no excuse should he not deliver on his campaign promises of inclusivity and broad based participation and opportunities.
Defeated Wavel caused barely suppressed laughter amid United Seychelles supporters when he tried to uptalk his defeat at the hands of deeply disillusioned and disappointed voters who has put him in office during the previous election over his various campaign promises – literally all of which were left broken and undelivered with main beneficiaries being his hanger-ons and inner cercle including his family. Allegations of corruption were widespread during his reign but pushed under the proverbial political carpets, all of which will no doubt now again be looked into.
Said Wavel: “I leave with a legacy that makes many presidents blush… I hope President Herminie continues to maintain such a level,” he uttered with deep disappointment written all over his face, knowing that his level of government malpractices inflicted on the Seychelles should surely not be copied at no level – ever.
