SEYCHELLES IN A STATE OF SHOCK AS NEWS EMERGE OF FORMER PRESIDENT SIR JAMES MANCHAM PASSING
(Posted 08th January 2017)
The founder President of the Seychelles, Sir James Mancham KBE, passed away earlier today.
Sir James led the Seychelles into independence from Britain and assumed the office of President on the 29th of June 1976, before he was overthrown and exiled after Albert Rene, who then assumed the office of President , captured power on the 05th of June 1977 in a coup.
Sir James returned to his native Seychelles after former President James Alix Michel had started to open up the political space and under this change of policy did Sir James become a respected Ambassador of the Seychelles at home and abroad, where he gained fast prominence as an advocate for world peace and for reconciliation at home.
Sir James regularly appeared in the columns of www.etn.travel as a commentator and more recently when he gave an interview. Known well to both eTN’s Publisher Juergen Thomas Steinmetz and also to this correspondent was Sir James an inspiration to listen to and a fountain of historical wealth when talking about his younger years in the Seychelles, before and after independence.
Our thoughts and prayers, deepest sympathy and sincere condolences from the entire eTN team go out to Sir James’ family and friends on this sad occasion of his passing.
The Seychelles is poorer for his passing and for his absence at a time when the country is undergoing political change and needed a man of his calibre and stature to act as senior statesman for all of the Seychellois.
