#Seychelles gives date for Presidential election this year

OCTOBER 22ND TO 24TH SET FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

(Posted 06th June 2020)

Four candidates are likely to contest the upcoming presidential election in the Seychelles, among them sitting President Danny Faure, former Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine Alain St. Ange, perennial candidate Wavel Ramkalawan and possibly Patrick Pillay who stood in the last elections, though a formal commitment from him is still outstanding.
Wavel Ramkalawan notably lost in all his past six attempts during the elections.

The incumbent President, namely Danny Faure, will be participating as a candidate in his first presidential elections, having assumed office following former President James Michel’s unexpected resignation in 2016. His United Seychelles political party evolved from Parti Lepep and the former SPPF party, which in turn was borne from the SPUP party which came to power through the 1977 military coup d’etat. He has yet to announce his running mate.

Alain St.Ange, the One Seychelles party president and Peter Sinon, the Secretary-General, launched their party only in 2019 but have already established themselves as strong and credible contenders to look out for in the upcoming election. Both St.Ange and Sinon are familiar faces, having served previously as Government Ministers, each holding prominent portfolios. Alain St.Ange also served two terms in the Island’s Legislative and has also published books concentrating on the history of Seychelles politics.

The next candidate who has indicated his intention to run once again in the upcoming elections is Wavel Ramkalawan. His present political party is LDS, which evolved from SNP, UO and Parti Seselwa over the years and comprises an amalgamation of smaller political groupings too. His running mate will be Ahmed Afif, who during the last elections was the running mate of Patrick Pillay

ATCNews extends best wishes to the candidates and hopes for a peaceful, transparent and fair election campaign and election day(s).
