Seychelles government makes good of election promise and halts construction on Assomption Island

The recently inaugurated new government of the Republic of Seychelles, led by newly elected President Dr. Herminie, has made good of election promises to halt the ongoing construction on Assomption Island.

A significant number of breaches of the various permits given by the previous regime were reported in the local media – despite an attempted media ban by the previous regime – and notices to the developers to halt construction were conveniently ignored. Grapevine talk from the islands has it that a shielding hand was held over the project and when the former regime was defeated at the polls that godfather protection ceased to exist.
