After 5 years of building work has the La Gogue Dam, the largest fresh water reservoir in the Seychelles on the main island of Mahe, can now undergo tests to establish full functionality before water can be released for treatment and consumption. The level of water was given by a source in Victoria as 82 percent full.
The project completion was delayed by amongst other factors the challenges posed by the global Covid19 pandemic, which disrupted supply chains and raised the overall cost.
The dam wall was raised by 6 metres at a cost of nearly 30 million US Dollars, two thirds of which was financed through a loan by the African Development Bank.
President Wavel last week commissioned the new enlarged dam, after the holding capacity was raised by some 60 percent. This translates to 1.6 million litres of water when full and the next rainy season is expected to refill the reservoir and easen the pressure on the provision of fresh water to people and businesses in Central and Northern Mahe.
