CLEANING BEACHES OF PLASTIC WASTE – OTHER COUNTRIES’ PLASTIC WASTE
(Posted 17th March 2019)
The ongoing cleanup of the Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site has now seen a similar activity unfold on several of the Seychelles’ outer islands.
Information received from the archipelago suggests that volunteers, like in Aldabra, will embark on a major beach cleanup of such islands as Alphonse, Farquar, Desroches and Coetivy but also of Poivre, Remire, Astove and Platte Island.
The Islands Development Company, a parastatal body, will provide the logistics for the exercise which is expected to bag hug quantities of landed rubbish and in particular plastic waste, swept ashore on Aldabra and the other Seychelles’ islands – an indication of how polluted our oceans are.
Little if any of the plastic waste is thought to come from the Seychelles directly as a result of strict environmental laws to protect the archipelago’s pristine waters and beaches, of course the foundation of the country’s tourism sector.
The Seychelles presently receives much global publicity from Sky News which follows the exploits of a group of researchers using small submarines to explore the reefs surrounding the islands.
