TRAINING TOUR GUIDES PART OF SEYCHELLES’ STRATEGY TO OFFER HIGHER SERVICE LEVELS

The Seychelles Tourism Academy has last week graduated newly trained tour guided after they completed a three day intensive course in La Misere.
History and Geography of the archipelago were essential course elements as were knowledge about flora and fauna of the islands, communication skills and basic first aid knowledge, rounded up by a half day tour across Mahe to acquaint the new guides with the various locations of attractions tourists wish to see.
The Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine Mr. Maurice Loustau-Lalanne said to the new graduates that the changes the Seychelles tourism sector was undergoing required better skilled staff including guides. He encouraged them to be ambassadors for the country.
Also present was the Principal Secretary in the Ministry Ms. Anne Lafortune and long serving Principal of STA Mr. Flavien Joubert.
Attending such courses is now a mandatory regulatory requirement for licensing by the Ministry’s licensing department.
Meanwhile was the first multi sectoral meeting held at the Seychelles International Conference Centre bringing together public and private sector stakeholders and relevant partners to discuss the way forward for the tourism industry.
The meeting chaired by Vice President Vincent Meriton to further discuss and propose solutions to challenges affecting the tourism industry.
The participants were updated on progress made to address some of the issues that came up in the last meeting in June 2016, including noise pollution, stray dogs, illegal tourism businesses such as illegal accommodations, mooring concerns on Praslin, among others.
It also provided the platform for the stakeholders to take stock of the current state of the tourism industry and address recurrent and emerging issues.
Besides the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine were the ministers responsible for Environment, Mr. Didier Dogley, Employment and Immigration Mrs. Myriam Telemaque and of Fisheries and Agriculture, Pamela Charlette present.
It is expected that during 2018 four such meetings will be held compared to just three last year, a sign how serious the Seychelles government has taken recent travel advisories from Britain.
