A Ugandan registered Beech 1900D, 5X-RHB, MSN UE429 and first entering service in 2001, crashed earlier today while taking off from the Unity Oilfield airstrip, reportedly killing 20 of the 21 on board.

The aircraft operator was named as Light Air Services, lsf Eagle Air of Uganda.

The aircraft was carrying oil workers from the Unity oilfields of Rubkona County in Unity State to Juba Airport crashed at 10:30 a.m. and both South Sudanese nationals and foreigners were on board the aircraft.

This latest air accident is one in a long line of such tragedies, making South Sudan one of the countries in Africa, if not the world, of the poorest aviation safety records.

An air accident investigation will be launched and is set to include Ugandan officials as the aircraft was registered with the Ugandan Civil Aviation Authority.
