SUSTAINABLE TOURISM TRAININGS
STTA has trained over 15 conservancies since June on Social Frameworks in Sustainable Rangeland management with Mara Training Center and Masai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association. These trainings are aimed at building the capacity of community conservancies and their respective governance and leadership structures to better manage their resources sustainably.STTA has also held several business sustainability coaching trainings for corporates and tourism professionals in the same period. The latest of these trainings was held from 11th to 13th October 2017. Those trained were representatives from Bead Safaris, Lake Victoria Tourism Association, Mara Training Center, Basecamp Explorer, recently formed Lakipia Tourism Association, Hemingways and Masai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association.

STTA MONTHLY INTER-UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SEMINARS
We took our 7th monthly inter-university students seminars on sustainable tourism to Mombasa County i.e. Coastal Kenya. The seminar which was the 7th of the series was hosted by Technical University of Mombasa. STTA, Technical University of Mombasa and The Department of Tourism of The Ministry of Tourism, Kenya discussed with students the ethical issues surrounding dark tourism, orphanage tourism, slum tourism and sex tourism. What came out of the discussion is that, for tourism development to be sustainable in Kenya, our policies should evolve with emerging forms of travel, and the evolution should not forget the ethical matters that affect tourism, people and wildlife. Report will soon be made available.
The seminars are supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Uniglobe Let’s Go Travel, Kenya Touriism Board and the Departments of Tourism of various universities in Kenya. The next seminar will be held at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri County on the 25th of November 2017.

AWARDS
Mazingira Awards 2017
STTA in partnership with WWF-K, presented 8 awards to 8 accommodation facilities for their best practices in waste management. This was after STTA, WWF-K and Water Resource Management Authority conducted a survey in the Mara river basin to determine the state of waste management by accommodation facilities. The report from the survey and the winners can be found in the 7th issue of the Sustainable Tourism East Africa Report
Chief Judge and Judge-THE ECO-WARRIOR AWARDS 2017
Judy Kepher-Gona, the Director of Sustainable Travel and Tourism Agenda, was once again selected as the Chief Judge for the Eco Warrior Awards 2017. Job Odhiambo the head of research and field course coordinater for STTA was also selected as one of the judges among the 10 for the awards.
Unlike the previous Eco-Warrior awards whose award categories were based on the type of tourism business e.g. tour operator, lodge, airline, conservancy etc., and the award ceremony held in October, the the 2017 Ecowarrior Award was special. The 2017 Ecowarrior Awards was special because it focused on advancing the sustainable development goals in tourism and celebrated those who were making strides in achieving the 2030 Agenda of sustainable development through the SDGs. The award ceremony was also moved to 27th September, The World Tourism Day.
STTA congratulates all winners and Ol Pejeta Conservancy for emerging as the overall winner of the 2017 awards.

The Green Tourism Summit Africa-2017
“Africa must open it borders for African Travelers” Carmen Nibigira, Coordinator of East Africa Tourism Platform and proponent of intra-AfricaSTTA hosted the 3rd Green Tourism Summit Africa at the Park Inn in Nairobi, Kenya on the 13th through to the 15th of June 2017. The theme for the summit was Sustainable Tourism and The Sustainable Development Goals; New Challenges or Opportunities?
The summit participants emphasised on the need to embrace sustainability to address threats that are currently hindering tourism in Africa from leaping forward. After 3 days of presentations and discussions, the over 50 delegates representing various tourism and conservation organizations in Kenya and across the border, unanimously agreed that sustainable tourism can be a force for good and that tourism development in Africa in its current form would not transform the regions economies and escalate the realization of the SDGs.
Disruptive thinking and policies is required if tourism is to effectively contribute to SDGs, concluded the 3rd Green Tourism Summit Africa. Partners for the summit were WWF-K, Uniglobe Let’s Go Travel, Bright Light, Fairview Coffee Estate and African Fund For Endangered Wildlife.
