Stung by harsh critique over fee increase for national parks is the move suspended

(Posted 07th April 2020)

It did not take long after local media and travel media had picked up on the planned fee increase for Kenyans wishing to visit the country’s national parks, before the Kenyan government hastily suspended the move in the face of growing anger and reactions going viral on social media.
While the Cabinet Secretary in his letter – copy shown above – insists that the fee increases were gazetted in December, did the news nevertheless only break yesterday and today, leading to acid comments in regard of the government’s ill timed move to have Kenyans pay more at a time when the bulk of the tourism industry employees, but also those of other economic sectors, face a very uncertain future in regard of their jobs and their income.
Facit of the protests and having exposed the planned increase – it has been suspended under very intense public pressure.
The impact of the media again showed what is possible and what can be achieved – Quod Erat Demonstrandum!
